Nigeria has participated in various Olympic games and sports competitions featuring in many fields like shot put, long jump, football and more, and it includes;

1992 Summer Olympic Games held 27 July to 9 August in Barcelona, Spain.

1972 Summer Olympic held 26 August to 11 September in Munich, Germany.

1984 Summer Olympics held 28 July to 12 August in Los Angeles, California, United States.

1996 Summer Olympics held 19 July to 4 August in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.

2000 Summer Olympics held 15 September to 1 October in Sidney, Australia.

2008 Summer Olympics held 8 August to 24 August in Beijing, China.

2012 Summer Olympic Games held 27 July to 12 August in London, United Kingdom.

2016 Summer Olympics held 5 August to 21 August at Rio de Janeiro

2018 Winter Olympics held 9 February to 25 February in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Achievements

In the year 1992 Nigeria won two silver medals in boxing at the Summer Olympic through David Izonritei and Richard Igbineghu in the (+91 kg) category held in Barcelona.

In the year 1964, one of the athletes that represented Nigeria in the Olympics held in Tokyo won a bronze medal in the 71kg class.

In the year 1972, Isaac Ikhoura won a bronze medal in the 81kg class in Olympics held in Munich.

In the year 1984, Nigeria won four silver medals in the Olympics through the Featherweight boxer Peter Konyegwachie in Los Angeles.

In the year 1996, Nigeria won the Olympic Gold in Atlanta USA in football category while they won a bronze medal in boxing category by Duncan Dokiwari (+91 kg).

In the year 2000, Nigeria participated in the Olympic Games although they did not win any award. In the year 2008, they took part in Beijing Olympic and won a bronze medal in football category.

They won a bronze medal by men’s football squad at the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro from 5 to 21 August.

Nigeria is the first African country to participate in Bobsleigh and Skeleton, they participated at the 2018 Winter Olympics held in Pyeongchang, South Korea from 9th to 25th February 2018 of which three Nigerian female athletes Ngozi Onwumere, Seun Adigun, and Akuoma Omeoga represented the country in Bobsleigh and Simidele Adeagbo who qualified for Olympics in skeleton sports. 

Nigerian athletes have won a total of about 24 medals in athletics and boxing throughout the Olympic Games held and still counting. Nigeria is the first country to win all three medals at the Olympic Games with the 1996 squad winning the gold, 2008 squad winning the silver and the 2016 squad winning the bronze medal.

Nigerian athletes since history have achieved so many awards in Olympic Games from history till date and are still making progress to achieve more in the years to come thereby making the country and African at large proud.

So Far Nigeria Has 23 Medals at the Olympic Games

Grouped as follows:

  • 2 gold, 9 silver, 12 bronze in the Olympic competition they have competed so far.
  • They have won 4 medals at the 2008 Games in Beijing (1 silver, 3 bronze).
  • Nigeria's have won a gold medal at the 1996 Games in Atlanta through their Men's Football team, the Flying Eagles.
  • Chioma Ajunwa has also won a gold medal in women's long jump competition at the Olympic.
